Hubert Mcintosh, known popularly as Peter Tosh, was
a founding member of the original Wailers in 1963, and
was the group's only real musician at that time. As
a youth a Savannah-La-Mar, he built his first guitar
from a sardine pan, and went on to master the organ
and melodica. His country vibes, mixed with a "churchical"
upbringing, lent a mystical edge to the Wailers music.
In the late '60s he began releasing solo instrumentals,
and recorded with Johnny Nash. Following the Wailers'
breakup, he released his first solo album, "legalize
It." in 1976, filled with uncompromisingly militant
lyrics. In 1978, Tosh appeared at the One Love Peace
Concert in Kingston, where he unleashed a series of
accusatory diatribes against the political parties in
Jamaica. His fiery rhetoric led to his being beaten
almost to death by police. He made his last live performance
and the end of 1983. In 1987, shortly after the release
of his final album "No Nuclear War, " Tosh
was murdered by thieves who broke into his home in Kingston.
He is survived by ten children, including singer Andrew
Tosh.
